Post-Thanksgiving Naps

So, who likes to take a nice long nap after a great Thanksgiving meal? I know I do! However, sleeping after eating is not good for the digestive system. Your body is much more comfortable digesting its food in an upright position. So instead of hitting the couch after eating your Thanksgiving meal, offer to help with the dishes or clear the table. Try to stay up and moving after you eat because it will help with the digestive process. If you do fall asleep after eating, be sure to have an antiacid near by because there is a high chance that you will get heartburn.
P.S. if you LOVE Black Friday shopping like me, try doing that after eating your Thanksgiving dinner! You will burn 450-500 calories! (You have to burn off those 4,500 calories from your meal somehow!)

Thanksgiving

With Thanksgiving coming up, I am incredibly excited to have REAL food and also not have to pay for any of it! It's honestly one of my favorite holidays, and I love spending quality time with my family and friends. And as much as a love Thanksgiving, the health nerd in me always comes out. Did you know that the average American consumes 4,500 calories for one Thanksgiving meal?! (This number also does not include alcohol). Many people already know that each person should consume about 2,000 calories per day, but on this one day of the year, we consume about 4,500 calories! Crazy right? Leave your comments on this number. Do you think its accurate? Do you think you eat that amount or less?

County Health Ratings

I recently had an assignment due for my Topics in Health class where we had to look up our home counties and find their health rankings. It was really interesting to see the different counties in Pennsylvania and how different they are from one another. My hometown is in Allegheny County, and the areas that are getting worse are shocking. For example, adult obesity, sexually transmitted diseases, and childhood poverty are all increasing in Allegheny County, but there are some things that have been improving, such as premature death, alcohol impaired driving deaths, and violent crimes. To find your county health rankings, visit http://www.countyhealthrankings.org/
This is a great website for everyone to use, especially Health and Physical Education teachers! Comment with what your county health ranking is.

Gymnast Who Overcomes the Odds

In my Adapted Physical Activity class, we are currently learning about amputees. We watched a video in class today about a gymnast who had bone cancer and had to get her leg amputated. She thought she could never do gymnastics again, but she pushed herself and is now training again. As a former gymnast, I could never imagine doing this sport without one of my limbs; it was hard enough with all 4 limbs. Anyways, I was really touched by the video and wanted to share it here. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Feel free to leave your comments (positive or negative) on what you think of the video.
